Leather Material Types 8 items

We work with three principal leather grades:

  • Full-Grain Vegetable-Tanned Leather: Organic, sturdy, develops the most breathtaking amber patina.
  • English Bridle Leather: Wax-infused, dense, water-resistant hide cut for heavy-duty belts and structural bag handles.
  • Oiled Pull-Up Leather: Rich in natural oils and waxes, producing dynamic color shifts when flexed.

Full-grain is the highest quality grade of leather in the world. It comes from the outermost layer of the hide with the natural grain completely intact — un-sanded and un-buffed.

Because the tight natural fibers remain uncompromised, full-grain leather is exceptionally durable, highly breathable, and develops a lustrous, storybook patina over years of use.

Top-grain is the second-highest grade where the very top surface of the hide has been lightly sanded or buffed to eliminate minor blemishes or scars, followed by a finishing coat.

While softer and more uniform than full-grain, it has less tensile fiber strength and does not develop the deep natural patina of full-grain hide.

Corrected grain is lower-grade leather that has had its entire top surface sanded away to remove severe flaws, followed by artificial texture embossing (such as pebble grain) and synthetic pigment coating.

It lacks natural breathability and feels stiff or plastic-like over time.

PU (polyurethane) leather is an artificial petroleum-based plastic material made by applying a polymer resin over a fabric base. It contains zero animal leather.

PU leather does not breathe, degrades and peels within 1–2 years, cannot be conditioned or repaired, and contributes to plastic waste. We never use PU in our workshop.

Vegetable tanning (veg-tan) is an ancient, organic tanning artisan method that uses natural tannins extracted from tree bark (such as oak, chestnut, and mimosa). It takes 1 to 3 months of slow immersion.

The result is a sturdy, fragrant, biodegradable leather that absorbs oils from your hands and develops a golden, heirloom patina over a lifetime of use.

Chrome tanning is a modern industrial process using chromium sulfate mineral salts to tan hides in just 24 to 48 hours.

It yields soft, pliable leather with uniform colors and high water resistance, but lacks the burnishable edge character, structure, and generational aging qualities of veg-tan hide.

Semi-vegetable tanned leather (combination tanned) undergoes an initial light mineral chrome bath for softness and tensile strength, followed by a heavy organic vegetable retannage for body, grain definition, and burnishability.

It combines the suppleness of chrome tanning with the rich tactile hand and patina of vegetable tanning.

Care 1 item

Proper care ensures your leather piece lasts for generations:

  1. Keep Dry & Ventilated: Store in a cool, breathable cloth dust bag away from direct sunlight or radiator heat.
  2. Air Dry When Wet: If exposed to rain, gently blot with a soft dry towel and allow to dry naturally at room temperature.
  3. Condition Regularly: Apply a dime-sized dab of natural beeswax or lanolin leather conditioner every 3–6 months. Allow it to absorb for 15 minutes, then buff with a horsehair brush.

Workshops 1 item

We host intimate, hands-on masterclasses in our Colombo atelier! During a 3–4 hour personalized workshop, you will learn hide selection, pattern cutting, traditional dual-needle saddle stitching, and beeswax edge burnishing.

All materials and tools are provided, and you walk home with your own handcrafted custom creation. Book a workshop seat on our Services page →.
